This past February, Bill Simmons announced he had teamed up with WWE, HBO Sports and producer/director Jason Hehir to create a documentary about former wrestler, actor and larger-than-life personality Andre the Giant.
On Friday, HBO tweeted an official trailer for the piece.
The quick look at Andre the Giant includes brief snippets of in-ring action from the former champion’s historic wrestling career. It also describes his “mythological” stature as an athlete and famous figure.
With Wrestlemania 33 only days away , its time to relive Wrestlemania memories and I have a lot of memories through the years . We will have a different Wrestlemania memory all this week leading up to our Wrestlemania Predictions . Here are the memories of Wrestlemania 1 :
Wrestlemania had the best buildup of any event in history, they stretched it out and just the buildup was epic. The whole thing with Cyndi Lauper and the Rock N Wrestling connection , it made wrestling cool again .
Hulk Hogan and Mr. T even hosted Saturday Night Live , the night before the big event. There was just so much news and excitement with this event, something not seen ever before . They even had wrestling on MTV, which then was the hottest thing in the universe.
Unfortunately I didn’t have cable back then in New York, Cablevision was being a bitch with hooking up parts of New York and the boroughs. So I had to call a 976 number every few hours to get up to date results, 976 was our internet back then lol. I had to watch Wrestlemania 1 the next day , as a friend who had cable recorded it on VHS for me. Couldn’t wait to watch all the excitement.
The matches I most remember from the first Wrestlemania were Andre The Giant Vs. Big John Studd and Piper n Orton Vs. Hogan and Mr. T. The Andre match was good as Andre was the first person to slam the unslamable Big John Studd . The Hogan match was just epic and a good way to finish the storyline with Piper and also build up Mr. Wonderful Paul Orndorf. Here are some highlights of Wrestlemania 1 :
