Mighty and Ray are two characters that have been missing since the early 90s and have not shown up in a game since. There’s even a running joke that has Missing posters of them posted throughout the City Escape level of Sonic Generations—alluding that Sega was well aware of not having used the characters in a while.
The good news is that they are no longer missing as this new episode for Sonic Mania Adventures has Mighty and Ray battling Metal Sonic. This episode also serves as an introduction to the characters prior to their debut in Sonic Mania Plus, which will finally feature them as playable characters.
Might the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel will be available as free downloadable content for people who already own Sonic Mania, and will be included with Sonic Mania Plus when the game releases—both physically and digitally—on the 17th of July.
When creating Sonic Mania Plus, the game started out as a digital-only title, but requests from both inside and outside the company made Sonic Team release it physically as well. Because it would be difficult to sell the physical version with the same price as the digital, however, the producers added extra elements to compensate the price hike, like new characters and Encore Mode. When it came to deciding the additional features, Sonic Team followed Sonic Mania‘s way of giving a stimulus to fans’ curiosities and expectations by adding Ray and Mighty, two highly requested characters, to the game, despite the two characters being considered “sealed characters” by Takashi Iizuka. When the team had to decide on Mighty and Ray’s special actions, Mighty received his “Hammer Drop” after the team reflected on his “strong guy” setting and hard shell, while Ray received his “Air Glide” as a callback to his species

Sonic Mania is launching across for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Switch on August 15th.
The Sonic Mania Comic Con panel has come and gone, with it we got news regarding lots of things Sonic Mania related (which will be covered in tomorrow’s video) but we also got to see a Sonic Mania’s instruction manual in the form of a promotional item that was given away at the event. Sega of America has terminated Archie Comics’ license to produce comic books based on its Sonic the Hedgehog.
“After 24 years of memorable storytelling, SEGA of America will conclude their Sonic the Hedgehog publishing partnership with Archie Comics,” stated a statement from SEGA. “This does not mark the end of Sonic in comics, but signifies SEGA of America’s decision to take a different direction for the series that will be announced at a later date. SEGA would like to thank Sonic’s amazing fans for their loyalty and passion over all the years. SEGA looks foward to providing more information soon.”
First launched in 1992, Archie produced over 280 issues of a Sonic the Hedgehog series as well as various spin-offs. In January 2017, the publisher abruptly cancelled all solicited Sonic-related titles (as well as a planned 2017 Free Comic Book Day title) and did not solicit any since.
When reached for comment earlier this month, an Archie Comics representative told Newsarama that communication with Sega was still ongoing to resume publishing of the titles.
Two Sonic games are coming out this year. Sonic Forces is a modern game, with a large cast of woodland creatures that look like no living thing and many 3D sections. Sonic Mania, though, is an homage to the early ‘90s 2D platformers that made the blue hedgehog a legend, and if it’s received well, it might have a bigger impact than you’d think.
column spoke with the boss of Sonic Team, Takashi Iizuka, about the two different approaches on each game. It’s been a while since an exclusively 2D Sonic was made – and he’s uncertain about the reception. Yet, if things go well, it seems Mania could affect the entire course of the franchise:
“For Mania it’s kind of like a new approach – to target specifically 2D fans,” he says. “So we don’t know whether it’ll be accepted positively in the market. We’ll find out after the game’s released, and we can figure out the direction of future titles after seeing the reaction.”
That’s slightly surprising, as Mania is made by an indie team plucked from the Sonic fan community. You’d be called cynical, but probably forgiven, if you assumed that the Sonic Team view it as a sop to the old-school fans while they get on with another flashy 3D title. Not so, apparently, and that’s encouraging.

I love all the Sonic the Hedgehog games from the nineties, but I think they got this game F! up again what I really want is Sega to focus in a good classical Sonic storyline Like the classical game from the Sega Genesis, my opinion I’ll be honest, I saw the trailer and I think it was,,,,,,, mmmmm! I don’t know. I still need to see more Future news about the game and what best storyline is going to be. Now I really just want the Sonic mania game, that really is a game that I want to play
